Hybrid Rose History

Rose is undoubtedly the favorite flower of many people in the world and is probably grown in every country where the climate allows. Rose has a long and colorful history, and according to fossil evidence, this rose could be 35 million years old. Today, there are over 30,000 species of rose around the world, and they have a very complex but interesting family tree.

There are so many different types of rose that choosing can often be confusing. In the UK the most common hybrid roses are floribunda, miniature and dwarf. The smaller roses are now often known as patio roses.

Roses come in many varieties including: climbing roses, ramblers, Dutch roses, bush roses, miniature roses, English roses, etc. The range of choices is vast, and as such, novice rose enthusiasts may find things a bit confusing.

A little understanding of the history of roses should help you choose the most suitable rose for you. Today, most roses come from about 100 species of roses, only a few of which are grown. Most of our garden roses are hybrid roses.

Hybrid Rose Varieties

Banksia Rose R.banksiae() ) is probably the best known, it is native to China and has a short flowering season; but is very spectacular when in full bloom. This almost thornless climber can grow to 10m x 10m and the most common, the yellow (var. lutea) and the white (var. Banksiae) are other widely grown cultivars.

Rosa Rugosa and Rosa Chinensis Mutablis are an attractive two-tone pink and yellow variety. Also included are Rosa Multiflora Platyphylia, probably an old Chinese variety; introduced in 1816 and also known as the “Seven Sisters Rose” Also known as: Wild or early hybrid rose. Wild roses have long been used in the production of rose water, essential oils, and other perfumes. Rose cultivation was well underway in China by 500 BC, and the Romans and other early European civilizations undoubtedly also cultivated large quantities for commercial use.

Some Roman emperors filled their baths and fountains with rose water and sat on carpets of rose petals for their feasts and pleasures. The rose was used as a symbol for celebrations, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume.

When peasants reduced their cultivation to growing roses instead of food to satisfy the demands of their rulers, the rose became synonymous with the worst excesses of the Roman Empire.

Early European roses were probably forms of R. gallica, native to Europe, found from France to the Caucasus. Gallica Rose is a compact rose with fragrant flowers that come in shades from white to pink to red and in single and double blooms. The exact geographical origin of R.gallica is unknown, but Iranians in the 12th century BC referred to it as a symbol of love and commitment.
