Storing roses in water, learn the most basic method of storing roses in water

Roses are one of the most popular flowers of the last century, and many people are looking for simple solutions to keep them fresh for a few more days. Storing roses in water is one of these simple and practical solutions that can extend the life of your flowers to at least a week. To store rose branches in water, follow the instructions below.

Prepare your vase

Using clear and transparent vases can significantly reduce the chance of pathogens such as fungi and bacteria growing. First, wash your vase thoroughly with hot water and dishwashing liquid, as hot water kills all germs and pathogens. When washing, make sure that the dish is completely clean of dishwashing liquid and that no trace of it remains.

Prepare the vase water

Boiled or purified water are the best options for storing roses in water. If you cannot use these waters, fill the vase with city water and leave it alone for 2 hours to remove the chlorine. The best temperature for storing roses in water is 23 to 24 degrees, which is the same temperature range as room temperature. Never place roses in very cold or hot water; this causes temperature stress in the flower and accelerates its wilting.

Prepare the flowers

First, remove the cut flowers from their packaging; then separate the flower stems one by one. When storing roses in water, you should remove the lower leaves from the stem, as leaving them in water increases the growth of bacteria and pathogens. Cut the ends of the flower stems at a 45-degree angle. Always remember that your flower cutting tools should be completely clean, sterilized, and sharp. It is best to cut a maximum of 2 centimeters from the end of the flower stem every 2 days. This will allow for better water transfer from the stem to the petals and extend the life of the rose.

Change the water in the vase

As mentioned in the previous sections, it is best to keep the water temperature used to store the flowers at room temperature so that the plant is protected from cold and heat stress. When storing roses in water, it is best to change the water in the vase at least once every two days; of course, this also depends on the ambient temperature. The warmer the weather where you live, the sooner you should change the water in your rose vase. If your home is in a cold area, change the water in your rose vase every two days, and if you live in a hot area, change it once a day.

Arrange the flowers

It is best to remove the wilted petals from the bud when placing the flowers in the water; This will slow down the wilting process of the plant.

Put half of the stem in water

Many sources on "How to Store Rose in Water" mention that we should not immerse all parts of the stem in water. Just placing half of the flower in water is enough.

Sweeten the water in the vase

Using flower food can extend the life of cut roses. You can get these products from florists, but if you can't buy them, it's better to pour two tablespoons of sugar into your vase water and dissolve it completely; this can keep your flowers fresh and vibrant for a longer period of time.
