The effect of two rejuvenating pruning times on the vegetative and reproductive characteristics of four cut rose cultivars under soilless cultivation conditions.

After 4 to 5 years of growing rose bushes in a greenhouse, the quality and production of flowers gradually decrease. Therefore, in order to enjoy the rose bushes for longer and also to increase the quality of rose branches, they need rejuvenation and pruning. This study was conducted by comparing two pruning times (fall = early December and winter = early March) in 2005-2006 on four cut rose cultivars (African Dawn, Ilios, Maroussia, and Soprano) in one of the soilless cultivation greenhouses in Mahallat city. In December and March of 2005, 5-year-old grafted plants were pruned in such a way that three branches and 5 nodes remained on each plant. By pruning at these two times, the plants went to flowering in February 2005 and May 2006, respectively, and data were collected. The characteristics examined in this study were the number, fresh weight, height, number of leaves, number of leaflets, diameter and length of the internode of the flowering stem, length, diameter, number of petals, fresh and dry weight of rose buds, as well as the amount of leaf chlorophyll and the quality index of roses. The results showed that in most of the measured characteristics, pruning in winter has a better effect compared to pruning in autumn. Therefore, in cut rose bushes, after 5 years of use, it is better to perform rejuvenation pruning in winter (early March), although it is necessary to conduct more research on different varieties, given the diversity between varieties.
